Job Description:

Job Summary:The Laboratory Technician will perform any of the routine activities related to laboratory testing, under the direct and constant supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientists.Duties & Responsibilities:Participates in specimen testing according to established procedures working under the technical oversight of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.2. Establish positive patient identification on sample or in reporting systems before proceeding submitting samples for testing.3. Assists in preparation and storage of reagents and culture media.4. Assisting in the performance of quality control procedures.5. Perform automated RNA and DNA extraction from various specimen types by following the laboratory SOP.6. Perform certain complex lab procedures under general supervision including library prep for sequencing and PCR testing in accordance with the laboratory SOP.7. Documents all activities as necessary including preventative maintenance logs, instrument function checks, troubleshooting, and quality control to ensure regulatory compliance.Performs preventative maintenance (PM) on equipment, documents PM appropriately, makes minor repairs and immediately contacts appropriate personnel for problems requiring more complex repairs.Pipettes samples and reagents using calibrated and approved automatic syringes and dispensers.Records dates of receipt, in use, and expiration for all reagents, kits, controls, and standards used for assigned assays.Demonstrate the ability to communicate & consult with the CLS regarding technical decisions concerning testing and problem solving, as necessary.Request and pull samples pending tests by locating, sorting, and preparing samples for testing.Ensures that the laboratory has adequate supplies by monitoring lab supplies and reagents.Ensures that all specimens that are received are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure that there are no issues with patient identity and reporting.15. Gain knowledge and understanding of the laboratory's specimen acceptance and rejection criteria.16. Gain knowledge and understanding of all tests offered by the laboratory as well as all specimen requirement, collection, handling, transportation, and storage conditions.Assists in Order Entry if needed by operating the LIS system, following standard procedures when entering data and corrects, edits, and/or verifies data entered in the LIS.Performs accurate labeling, numbering, centrifuging, and preparing specimen aliquots.Performs proper storage of specimens before & after testing including properly discarding specimens according to SOP and as instructed by the Lab Manager or Lab Supervisor.Preparing specimens to be sent to a reference laboratory.Recording of temperatures for refrigerators, freezers, and room temperature.Documents and maintains accurate records of verbal communication with customers: physician's offices, medical facilities, medical staff, and patients.Assisting clients and phlebotomists with inquiries pertaining to specimens' requirements and test turnaround times.Documents and maintains accurate records of all communication with customers: physician's offices, medical facilities, medical staff, and patients.Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory after completion of workday.Complying with applicable laws and regulations, and company procedures and policies.Communicates regularly and effectively with the Laboratory Manager and/or laboratory staff.28. Complete other tasks as needed to support the objectives of the laboratory.Qualifications and Education Requirements:Education & Experience Requirements:o High school diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.o Associates degree or higher in biological or laboratory sciences, preferred.o Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related life scienceo 1+ years previous experience in clinical laboratory or related work environment preferred.o Previous experience and a working knowledge of Excel, Word, and OutlookOther Qualification & Requirements:Must be able to multi-task, prioritize and manage time efficiently.Ability to follow precise directions in situation requiring speed, accuracy, and efficiency.Ability to accurately identify specimens.Ability to work as part of a team, capable of working under deadlines without sacrificing quality, and the willingness to train in other areas of the lab.Strong PC skills and working knowledge of MS Office.Self-motivated, well-organized, reliable, and able to prioritize workload.Good personal and outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal.Ability to handle biological materials.Familiarity with CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements.Conduct activities in compliance with CLIA and other regulatory guidelines.Adheres to laboratory safety practices, including but not limited to OSHA blood-borne pathogens, HIPAA, and hazardous chemicals training and monitoring.Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions, and practices so that they may be corrected prior to an incident.Physical Demands & EnvironmentalThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
