Position Summary:

This administrative leadership position will advance innovation in the vitally important areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion across all of the school's missions (research, clinical care, and education) and throughout all segments of the school's community (faculty, staff, and learners). The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and collaborative leader who guides how these ideals are imbued within the organizational culture of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH).

This position reports to the dean and serves as a member of the Dean's Leadership Team, which is responsible for the development and implementation of the school's strategic direction.

This role is based on the premise that a comprehensive approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion in every effort, aspect, and level of the organization strengthens our pursuit of our values. SMPH is a highly complex, matrixed organization with talented faculty, staff, and administrators deeply engaged in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across all of the many units within the school. The chief diversity and inclusion officer will intersect with all areas of the SMPH, including clinical and basic science departments, centers and institutes, academic affairs, faculty development, research, education and training programs, human resources, communications, organizational development, policies and contracts, and administrative and academic leadership. This individual will lead a team of staff.

This role will be charged with identifying impediments to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the SMPH, as well as strategies and tactics for addressing them. The successful candidate will recommend and advocate for resources that will benefit diversity and inclusion programming, including programming outside of the chief diversity and inclusion officer's direct reporting line. Success will depend on cultivating effective relationships with multiple offices and key personnel across the school, including its statewide campuses, and the chief diversity officer at UW Health, the school's primary clinical academic partner organization. The successful incumbent will be a team player with demonstrated experience seeking out new collaborative pathways.

The chief diversity and inclusion officer will serve as a subject matter expert in areas such as social identity characteristics, inclusion, cultural competency, and influencing organizational culture. This role will have the authority and responsibility to create a unified, school-wide strategic framework for diversity, equity, and inclusion in synergistic partnership with other institutional leaders. The framework will leverage existing efforts, identify gaps and opportunities, and develop new strategies to shape the school's organizational culture in alignment with its mission and values.

The School of Medicine and Public Health has a deep and profound commitment to diversity as an end in itself and also as a valuable means for eliminating health disparities. As such, we strongly encourage applications from candidates who foster and promote the values of diversity and inclusion in a medical education and research environment.

Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison. We value the contributions of each person and respect the profound ways their identity, culture, background, experience, status, abilities, and opinion enrich the university community. We commit ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, outreach, and diversity as inextricably linked goals.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison fulfills its public mission by creating a welcoming and inclusive community for people from every background - people who as students, faculty, and staff serve Wisconsin and the world.
