Research Assistant III Veterinary Operations Job Overview We have a great opportunity for a Research Assistant III in our Veterinary Operations group at our Madison, WI lab. Help improve patients' lives while growing your career. In this role, you will perform surgical work for animal studies for all applicable departments. May work across Safety Assessment/Metabolism departments globally. Can collect information in compliance with appropriate SOP's, GLP's and regulatory agency guidelines. Responsible for having and maintaining in-depth understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as stressing tissue handling skills developed previously. The surgeon is expected to know and perfect surgical procedures classified as "Minor". Monitors animal health and welfare in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and help maintain facilities for AAALAC compliance. Assists the veterinary staff in all aspects of regulatory compliance and animal care. Essential Job Duties: Reports all animal care concerns and becomes involved in resolution and appropriate corrective action, when necessary Ensures that studies are conducted according to protocol, standard operating procedure documents, and government regulations Can interpret and understand a complex protocol including numerous work streams Basic understanding of good laboratory practice (GLP) principles Performs a data review of study materials with minimal quality control (QC) findings and understands the level of a quality assurance (QA) audit May assume coordinator role, e.g., equipment coordinator, FSA ordering agent, forms administrator, scheduling studies Able to identify process gaps and leverage Process Excellence tools to resolve, may serve as Process Excellence team subject matter expert (SME), may lead corrective action initiatives Effectively manages time and resources, e.g., equipment, rooms, feed, environmental requirements, study supplies, surgical supplies Involved in data management, e.g., may perform standard data analysis, standard report review and generation, metric data entry, archiving Involved in client/customer management, e.g., may have specific client/customer communication regarding surgical or veterinary care study related activities Review, revise or author standard operating procedure documents (SOPs), animal care and use activities (ACUAs), training documents or surgical descriptions May assist in model development projects with both internal and external clients Performs multiple methods of euthanasia on multiple species Performs anesthesia, monitoring and recovery on multiple species Learns to set up and maintain surgical suite for multiple different surgical procedures and performs aseptic surgical preparation Learns to perform pre- physical exams on multiple species Learns to perform small animal surgical procedures including suture techniques Learns to perform large animal surgical procedures including suture techniques Reviews surgical and technical requests, protocols, and Animal Care and Use Activities prior to performing procedures. Ensure availability of supplies needed for surgical requests. May prepare costing of surgical procedures. Able to perform literature searches and other research methods as needed. Perform veterinary directives and associated animal care activities as associated with surgical patients (ex: treatments, physicals, dental cleanings, anesthesia, and aseptic surgical prep) Knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. Education/Qualifications Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology or Associate degree in Veterinary Technology. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education. Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with laboratory animals AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level is preferred, but not required. Experience Minimum of 5 years internal surgical experience or 10 years of applicable laboratory/surgical experience (e.g. in-life operations, necropsy, external veterinary services). Must be able to demonstrate aptitude in tissue/instrument handling. Advanced computer knowledge.
