Role Purpose:
Responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating all nursing care functions for the Facility. Uses good judgment to make recommendations to Administrator on nursing matters. May perform the following duties personally or through subordinate personnel. Assumes complete responsibilities for the Care Center in absence of Administrator.
Responsibilities:

  • Nursing Administration: Plans, directs, and evaluates all nursing care functions for the facility. Monitors workflow of nursing units to ensure work is performed timely and accurately. Identifies opportunities for improvements and makes recommendations to Administrator on nursing matters. Collaborates with Medical Director in policy development and QI activities. Participates in Medical Committee and Ethics Committee. Ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations. Plans and facilitates meetings and committees to address resident care issues. Coordinates with other departments and outside vendors to ensure seamless delivery of services to residents. Collaborates with educational institutions to provide onsite educational opportunities for students (Youth Apprenticeship Program, Madison College RN/LPN programs, UW School of Nursing). Participates in developing, implementing and evaluating programs that promote the recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of nursing staff members. Rounds on unit at least once daily.
  • Manages the Nursing Department with the goal of achieving and maintaining the highest quality of care possible. Performs general management functions such as hiring, disciplining and evaluating employees. Participates in interviews and hiring of new nursing staff. Identifies training needs for department. Initiates studies to evaluate effectiveness of nursing services in relation to their objectives and costs. Holds monthly staff meetings for licensed and non-licensed nursing staff. Develops the department budget for approval, monitors expenses and stays within budget. Develops and manages staffing scheduler system. Ensures that adequate nursing staff are available based on facility/census requirements. Participates in the Employee Recognition Program. Ensures that annual competency evaluations and performance reviews are completed in the appropriate time frame.
  • Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance: Participates in Quality Assurance activities including data collection, data analysis, and planning improvement actions for Infection Control, Safety and other. Plans interventions to address concerns on QI reports, Press Ganey results, and My InnerView. Ensures implementation of corporate collaboratives such as AEPC, AES, Always Safe, Mandatory Immunization Program, etc. Participates in facility \"Performance Improvement Program.\" Collect data to compile reports in a timely manner, and to meet deadlines.
  • Supervision of Licensed Nurses: Interviews, hires, coordinates orientation, coaches, and completes performance evaluations for licensed nurses. Routinely seeks feedback from staff to identify opportunities for workplace improvement. Creates monthly newsletter for licensed staff and holds monthly staff meeting. Review time sheets for accuracy before payroll. Develops and manages nurse on call system. Plans and guides the professional development of nursing staff.
  • Clinical: Performs employee/volunteer health duties including immunizations, TB skin testing, etc. Participates in staff development for licensed and non-licensed staff. Participates in Wound Team. Acts as a resource for nursing staff regarding policy and procedure and provides guidance as needed. Develops and manages systems to assure clinical competencies. Assures that all clinical protocols and nursing policies and procedures are followed.
  • Investigate and resolve resident/family/employee concerns. Pro-actively addresses survey and/or standards of care issues.
  • Information Technology Maintenance: Helps to investigate, plan, and implement improvements in ECS to achieve greater efficiency, effectiveness, and safety. Keeps access code for computer confidential at all times. Does not share access code with other and does not use other's access codes.
  • Safety: Complies with safety policies/procedures to ensure safe practices for residents, staff, self and others. Ensures compliance with: gait belt use for all manually assisted transfers, locomotion/transfer/lifting devices, resident positioning, and always uses mechanical lift to lift resident from floor. Identifies wandering residents and responds to door alarms. Uses and disposes of sharps according to safety standards. Takes corrective action for safety issues. Assists in the development and implementation of worker's compensation, transitional duty, and safety programs. Assure Pharmacy, dietary, physician consults are followed in timely manner.
  • Infection Control: Ensures compliance with infection control standards including hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, and isolation precautions. Collaborates with public health in the event of an outbreak. Participates in mandatory vaccination programs. Does not work when contagious.
  • Privacy/Confidentiality: Maintains privacy and confidentiality for residents at all times including resident information in any format: paper, electronic, video, photographic and conversation.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
    • BSN
    • Licensure by the State of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse.
    • CPR Certification
    • Ability to communicate effectively with residents and their family members, and at all levels of the organization. Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act, state and federal regulations. Knowledge of training techniques for clinical staff. Skilled in directing and motivating the workforce.
    • Ability to react decisively and quickly in emergency situations. Ability to organize and prioritize. Efficiently and accurately enter data and utilize a PC for a variety of activities. Must be able to give and receive information in verbal and written form. Must be able to perform basic and advanced math (add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, statistics, decimals, and percentages). Preferred Qualifications:
      • Three to five years of previous nursing experience, especially in a geriatric setting, is preferred along with supervisory experience Physical Requirements:
        • Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 50 lbs.
        • Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily
        • Standing or walking more than 4 hours a day
        • Running to respond to patient emergencies
        • Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 6 hours a day
        • Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
        • Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
        • Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation
