Job Description:

Role Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Director of Medical Imaging, performs nursing functions as necessary for the well-being of the patient while in the department. Performs the duties in a professional manner and in accordance with accepted hospital policy so as to ensure the provision of the highest quality nursing care according to accepted nursing norms.

Role Responsibilities:
1. Customer Services or Customer Services: Communicates effectively with staff, patients and visitors.
2. Quality Improvement: Assists in data collection for patient flow, proficiency and quality assurance studies.
3. Human Relations: (A) Follows policy and procedure for conscious sedation of patients. (B) Communicates with department leadership about immediate concerns, needs or patient care issues. (C) Attend meetings and make contributions when appropriate.
4. Problem Solving: Verifies physician orders when necessary and make assessment of patients status.
5. Documentation: Proficient in the operation of the teleradiology and Picture Archive and Communications System (PACS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and the Electronic Health Record (EHR) for all exams.
6. Team Work: (A) Assists technologists in performing sterile procedures and isolation cases when necessary. (B) Assists supervisors in teaching nursing techniques to other staff members; periodically reviews sterile techniques used in various procedures.
7. Primary Responsibilities for Medical Imaging Nursing Services: (A) Observes and maintains supportive equipment with patient, i.e., intravenous, suction and oxygen units. (B) Assists with all medical imaging examinations on critically ill patients who need nursing observation and/or for conscious sedation. Assists radiologists with patients who have contrast media reactions and/or respiratory distress. (C) Monitor, reviews and clarifies patient procedure preparations with nursing units. (D) Assists with transfer of critically ill patients to and from nursing units. Receives report of patient's condition from nursing staff and provides patient assessment when returned. (E) Teach nursing procedures pertinent to any and all medical imaging exams. (F) Routinely performs narcotic inventory in PIXIS and reports to Pharmacy. Keeps medication stocked. Is familiar with medications and their usage in pediatrics, adult and geriatric patients. Checks drug expiration date and takes appropriate action. (G) Provides on call service to Medical Imaging for invasive procedures and transfer of critical care patients in accordance with department policy. (H) Maintains the integrity of emergency carts (adult and pediatric code carts, latex cart, reaction box and defibrillator).
8. Primary Responsibilities for Medical Imaging Charge Nurse Services: (A) Attends a.m. nursing rounds at 8:30. Reports staffing situation in Medical Imaging. (B) Communicates with all areas of department to determine nursing needs for the day. (C) Arranges assignments for the day, including lunches & breaks; assignments to be posted by 7:30 a.m. D) Maintains a running list of current procedures needing nurse coverage; coordinates to maximize coverage. (E) Negotiates with competing physician groups when work load exceeds capacity of nurses available. (F) Communicates with Administrative Nursing Supervisor if staff is available to assist other units. (G) Attempts to call in PRN staff when scheduled staff are unable to work. (H) At the end of the day reviews schedule for coming day to identify potential staffing opportunities, problems or concerns. (I) Performs Other Duties as Assigned.
9. For the previous evaluation period competences were up to date and current. Minimum Qualifications:


  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin required.
  • At least two years of experience as a staff nurse including cardiac monitoring.
  • Ability to concentrate.
  • Continues to learn new techniques, equipment and procedures.
  • Must be extremely accurate at all times and be able to perceive changes in patient's condition.
  • Ability to prepare and administer medications, regulate intravenous and oxygen levels.

    Physical Requirements:

    Employees in this position are, or can be, required to possess the following physical capabilities:

    • Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 100 lbs.
    • Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily.
    • Standing or walking more than 8 hours a day.
    • Running to respond to patient emergencies.
    • Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 8 hours a day.
    • Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
    • Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
    • Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation.
